What Wedding Photography Actually Costs in San Diego

Most wedding photography websites in San Diego will not tell you what they charge. You fill in a form, you wait, and a PDF arrives two days later. By then you have done this four times and lost a week.

We publish our numbers. Here they are, and more usefully, here is what actually moves them.

The short version

Photography starts around $2,600 for eight hours. Film starts around $2,100 for the same. Booking both together is less than the two added up, because one team covering both is genuinely cheaper for us to run than two.

Most couples we work with land between $3,500 and $6,000 all in, and the instant estimate will give you your own number in about a minute.

What actually changes the price

Hours, more than anything

Coverage is the biggest single lever. The difference between six hours and ten is not a small surcharge — it is a different day, a different number of people working, and a different amount of editing afterwards.

Most weddings need eight. Ten if you are doing a first look and want the reception covered properly through the end of the dancing.

Whether you want film as well

This is the second-biggest decision and the one couples agonise over most. Our honest view: photography matters more over a lifetime, and it is what gets printed and hung. But film is the only thing that keeps your voices.

If the budget genuinely only stretches to one, take photography. If it stretches to both, take both — and take them from one studio rather than two.

How many people are working

A second photographer is not decoration. While one of us is on your face during the vows, the other is on your mother's. You cannot get both from one camera, and there is no editing trick that recovers a moment nobody was standing in front of.

Travel

Inside San Diego County, nothing. Beyond it, we add mileage at cost and show you the arithmetic. Nobody should be marking up petrol.

What does not change the price

Guest count. A 60-person wedding and a 200-person wedding take the same hours to cover. Some studios charge by headcount. We do not understand why.

Weekday versus weekend. Same work, same rate.

How many photos you get. We deliver what is good. Charging by the image encourages exactly the wrong behaviour from a photographer.

The number nobody quotes you

Whatever you spend on a photographer, the real cost of getting it wrong is not the money. It is that there is no second attempt. You cannot reshoot a wedding.

That is not a reason to spend more than you have. It is a reason to spend what you have on the right person rather than splitting it across a cheap photographer and a videographer who have never met.

How to compare quotes properly

1. Check the hours. A $2,000 quote for six hours and a $2,600 quote for eight are the same rate. Compare like for like.
2. Ask who is actually shooting. Some studios sell you the founder and send an associate. We tell you upfront and every one of our team was trained by us.
3. Ask what happens if they are ill. Any studio doing this seriously has an answer. A solo photographer often does not.
4. Ask when you get the photos. "A few months" is not a timeline.
5. Look at a full gallery, not a highlight reel. Anyone can produce ten good frames. Ask to see an entire wedding, start to finish.
