What a Second Shooter Actually Adds

"Second shooter" sounds like an upsell. Sometimes it is. Here is how to tell whether it is worth it on your day.

It is not about volume

The common pitch is that you get more photographs. You do, but that is not the point, and more photographs is not obviously better.

The point is that a second photographer gets different photographs — specifically, the ones that are physically impossible for the first one to take.

The moments that need two cameras

Your faces during the vows. One camera is on you. One is on the person opposite you. There is no lens that solves this, and it is the single most requested frame in every gallery we deliver.

The aisle walk. Someone is ahead of you. Someone is behind you, on the faces watching you arrive.

Both parties getting ready. If you are in different places, one photographer means choosing whose morning gets covered.

The room during the speeches. Someone is on the speaker. Someone is on the reactions — which is where the actual story of a speech lives.

When you probably do not need one

• A short day. Under six hours there is often not enough happening at once.
• An elopement or a very small ceremony where one photographer can genuinely see everything.
• A single-location wedding with a compact timeline and no separate getting-ready.

We will tell you if we think this is you. Selling coverage you do not need is a bad way to run a fifteen-year business.

When you almost certainly do

• Getting ready in two locations
• More than about 120 guests
• A venue spread across grounds, where things happen out of sight of each other
• Any day where you have said the words "and at the same time"
